Early Years Foundation Stage

At Inkpen Primary School, we believe that a child’s first years at primary school provide a strong foundation on which their future learning is built. The experiences we provide our children are carefully designed to develop not only their knowledge and understanding but their confidence and independence, enabling them to become more motivated learners. We have created rich and stimulating environments, both indoors and outside, so that our children can access a wide range of experiences and opportunities that will shape them as learners.

Our curriculum is planned using “Development Matters”, the Non-Statutory guidance material that supports practitioners in delivering the statutory requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. It has been designed to underpin their learning across all areas of the curriculum in later years. It is carefully planned, not only to build on what the children know and can do, but to help them to think, discuss and plan what they will do next. This curriculum is underpinned by effective pedagogy to allow every child to learn and develop fully. Within the EYFS framework, there is a strong emphasis on the three prime areas (outlined below) which are "Particularly important for learning and forming relationships. They build a foundation for children to thrive and provide the basis for learning in all areas. (Statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage November 2024)

Communication and Language – At Inkpen, we know that children’s spoken language underpins all other areas of learning. Our aim is to ensure that our learning environments are set up in a way that promote discussion and interaction. The adult’s role in this is crucial and we ensure that staff interact effectively with children in a language-rich environment to allow all children to leave EYFS with effective communication skills.

Physical Development – We know how vital physical activity is to children’s all-round development so we plan for a range of opportunities in order for children to develop their fine and gross motor skills. Being part of the local community means that we have access to a range of facilities such as the beautiful woods next to the school and the village recreational ground which is just a short walk away. As well as these experiences, we ensure that our learning environments enable children to develop skills such as agility, coordination, balance and strength.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development -  At Inkpen, we understand the importance of personal, social and emotional development (PSED) in allowing children to lead happy, healthy lives and reach their cognitive potential. Our adults make building strong, warm and supportive relationships a priority in the early years and enable children to understand their own emotions and those of others. Children are taught, through a range of stories and experiences, to develop a positive sense of self and to have confidence in their own abilities.

There are also four specific areas of learning "which help strengthen and develop the three prime areas, and ignite children’s curiosity and enthusiasm." (Statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage November 2024)

Literacy - At Inkpen Primary School, we are committed to fostering children's literacy development. We employ a rich array of engaging activities that promote phonics, reading, and writing skills while nurturing children’s imagination. Our teachers and support staff create a stimulating environment where children can explore language through storytelling, songs, and play-based learning. By providing personalised support and encouragement, alongside a range of reading and writing opportunities, we empower each child to develop essential literacy skills. We believe that a strong foundation in literacy is crucial for lifelong learning, ensuring that every child is equipped to thrive in their educational journey.

Mathematics - We are dedicated to nurturing a solid foundation in mathematics for all our pupils. We employ the White Rose Maths scheme from the very beginning of Reception, which provides a structured and progressive approach to learning. This resource facilitates a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through engaging activities and practical applications, catering to the needs of each child. Our teachers and support staff create a supportive environment that encourages curiosity and confidence in mathematical problem-solving. We strive to foster a love for learning, with a focus on developing critical thinking skills that will benefit our students throughout their academic journey and beyond. By regularly assessing progress and adapting our teaching methods, we ensure that every child can achieve their full potential in mathematics while enjoying the learning process. Our commitment to high-quality education empowers children to excel and prepares them for future challenges in an ever-evolving world.

Understanding the World - At Inkpen, we are dedicated to fostering children's natural curiosity and understanding of the world around them. Our curriculum is thoughtfully designed to encourage exploration, promoting critical thinking and problem-solving skills through hands-on experiences. We provide a rich variety of resources, including interactive activities and outdoor learning opportunities, to engage children in discovering their environment, cultures, and global communities. We guide children as they enquire about their surroundings, nurturing a sense of wonder while reinforcing key concepts. By creating a safe and stimulating atmosphere, we empower children to ask questions, make connections, and develop a lifelong love for learning. Together, we strive to equip our children with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

Expressive Arts and Design - We are passionate about nurturing children's growth in Expressive Arts and Design through a lively and engaging curriculum. We recognise the importance of creativity in children’s development, allowing them to explore their thoughts and feelings in fun and imaginative ways. Our friendly and supportive staff create a warm environment where children can experiment with different art forms, including painting, music, and drama. By incorporating hands-on activities and collaborative projects, we encourage self-expression and confidence. We believe that fostering children’s creativity not only enhances their artistic talents but also builds essential skills for their future success.
